Why Don't Black Men Go to the Doctor ?
Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 01:02PM African American men are less likely to seek medical care than any other segment of the U.S. population. As a result, African American men are dying from preventable diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Factors such as finances, fear, racism and poor education are all well established reasons. What strategies can be used to get our brothers to the doctor sooner ?

Thanks for your feedback. This is a topic that definitely needs to be discussed on a broader scale. There are several reasons this disparity including fear, socio-economic and racism.
I work as a Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner and can't help but notice that the black population does not follow up with their healthcare as they should or as we(healthcare practitioners) think they should. Our practice takes all insurances, medicaid, state aide etc. I have to say, many of the patients I see in the practice are not stupid, dumb or uneducated. So why don't they seek healthcare?? What is the one thing we could do as healthcare practitioners to help the black population care for themselves? I found this site very informative and educational. Is it a mistrust of the system? Fear? Bonaventura
